Do you know those closets that you see in magazines or on TV? You know them. The ones that are so polished, clean, and organized it looks like a team of wizards sorted them. They are the closets you dream about but think you could never have.
Every article of clothing is sorted by size, color, material, length, and any other attribute you can think of. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but valid to an extent.
Well, I'm here to debunk that theory. With just a few tips, you can create the wardrobe you see in magazines. It just takes knowing how.
Here are my easy and achievable tips for getting the closet of your dreams.
My approach to home organization is rooted in my fundamentals, Sort. Simplify. Style.
First, you sort your items, simplify the space by eliminating what isn't needed, and style the area, which serves as a double entendre because by creating a well-sorted and simplified space, such as a closet, the room will not only look more styled, but by creating a sorted and simplified space, you in return will be able to style your outfits, and feel styled easily.

Above: my short-sleeved T-shirt and blouse wardrobe. It isn't perfect, but I have my tops sorted by color. I've chosen to sort my tops from right to left, with black on the right, followed by white, then soft colors like tan, then pink, blue, green, and yellow, then back to white with my sweater vests. Because I don't have multiples of every color, sorting by color looks different for me.
Create a Color System
Whether sorting styles by colors of the rainbow or in a different order, pick a color system that works for you and fits with your wardrobe colors and style.
From there, you can quickly start sorting your styles by length and sleeve length.
As part of the color sorting system, I sort my pieces from right to left, darkest to lightest. For example, I start with black shirts to my right, followed by brown, gray, and white. I group those colors together because I often reach for those in my everyday wardrobe. Then, once those are done, I start with the brighter colors of the rainbow.
After the neutral tones are organized and sorted, I start with my red tops, pink, orange, yellow, and so on. For the darker and bold colors, like the blues, greens, and purples, you could either sort those with the other bright colors or incorporate them into the dark hues like your brown, gray, and black tops and shirts.
Sort by Shirt Length and Sleeve Length
This tip mainly applies to anyone who has crop tops in their wardrobe. Sorting your tops by color is one piece of the organization process for a well-maintained closet.
The following piece is sorted by color and top length. As I mentioned, this is especially applicable and useful when sorting tops of different sizes, like a crop top against an oversized tee or an everyday hip-waisted length tee.
The reason for doing this is that if you only Sort by color and you have crop tops mixed in with full-length or oversized tops, your crop tops may get lost in the mix of the full-length tops. This could result in forgetting you have those and missing out on incorporating them into your style or buying repeats.
When you sort by length and color, you have your tan crop tops together, followed by your black crop tops, white crop tops, yellow, and so on. And it doesn't need to be in that order, just grouped. That way, you will see it thoroughly, and the next time, you want to style your favorite yellow crop top with that perfect black midi skirt or high-waisted jeans.

Above: I've created a different system with my loong-sleeve tops, t-shirts, and pull-over sweaters. I've started with my white shirts on the right, then tans. I've chosen to have my bold shirts in the middle. I've chosen to do this so they are front and center because it encourages me to reach for those more. Then I put the next closest color to the left of the blue, which is gray, and end with black.
Sort Tops by Occasion
While you sort by color, sorting by occasion is another way I organize my wardrobe. While sorting by color from right to left, I'm also considering the tops I wear to work or a night out against my casual t-shirts.
For example, you can have your t-shirts sorted by color and then create a new sort order by color for the elegant tops you wear to the office or get dressed up. Then, apply the same method to your long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and cardigans.
What matters most is to create a clean, well-organized, and styled system that works for you. I am here to provide guidance and support.
